Female singers are a dime a dozen these days. You can find them in every genre now, from country to metal. But when was the last time you heard a teenager singing with a powerful voice, and a positive message? One that doesn't fit into the stereotypical female teenager role, and isn't singing club tunes...
Amelia Scalies just isn't your typical teenager. Yes, she still sings about friends and boys, but she doesn't do it in the overtly sexual manner that seems popular with teenagers these days. Teens are all about the sex, drugs and drinking in music (well, those with a lack of taste anyway). But Scalies manages to make music that doesn't fit into the norm for her generation. I liken her somewhat to Avril Lavigne, but a little less punk.
From the very first song on her debut album, I Should’ve Known, you will be impressed with Scalies powerful vocal range, well written lyrics and the terrific beats backing her amazing sound. Scalies takes her music to a level that you just don't see much of anymore, making it the way she wants to. Her songs have meaning, and she tries to send messages through them to help those who listen.
In fact, “Don't Let Them Win” is a song about bullying that encourages those suffering from this problem to speak up. She has songs reminding us to cherish the people we care about, songs about true friendship, and more. Her music and lyrics truly do tell the tale of life, and our experience as human beings.
“Small Talk Friends” is one of my favorite songs on this album, and I think kids could relate well to the lyrics (I could back in the day):
“I’m gonna tell you something, babe, that’ll blow your little mind.
I’ve got the strength to walk away; that’ll serve me well in time!
Small talk friends, I hear the gossip, yeah, I heard it all,
Talking in the school hall.
Small talk friends, you think that I don’t know what’s going on,
Maybe then you judged me wrong?”
Even though I am not a teenager myself (far from it) I found a love for this album and this girls ability to make you feel for the music she is sharing. She has somewhat of a punk rock edge, but it's more mellow than that. She has fast songs and slow songs, but they all tell a story. One of the things that stands out is that Scalies isn't just a singer, she also plays guitar and violin, as well as writing her own songs. Talk about multi-talented!
Scalies is from Pennsylvania, and she has been in local contests and performed in local festivals. She has a deep passion for her music that shows in every single song she writes and performs. I Should've Known is packed with 11 powerful an uplifting tracks that you will fall in love with too.
