Surprisingly, most people are not familiar with her song writing abilities or band She and Him. Comprised of Zooey and Matt Ward, the duo has been producing music together since 2008. Carried on the Merge record label, the duo is primarily a cross between indie and 1960’s style pop. Although they have been known to cross various genres such as jazz and country. Over the last five years they have released a total of five albums.
Their first album titled Volume 1 had some minor success. “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here” reached number 68 on Rolling Stones top 100 list that year. The original video was released in 2008 and was later re-released in 2009 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the movie 500 Days of Summer. Most of the songs on the album were written by Deschanel.
Their second album titled Volume 2 was released in 2010. The song “In the Sun” also had mild success. It is a catchy happy tune that flows easily and evokes visions of summer and young love. That year the album debuted at number six on Billboards top 200 charts It continued to gain popularity with NPR’s audience.
The third album which was released in 2011 was a Christmas album titled A Very Merry She and Him Christmas. The songs are remakes of traditional songs sung with Zooey’s sultry voice. Her rendition of
"Baby It’s Cold Outside" was included in the soundtrack for the Christmas movie Elf.
Their newest album was released in May of this year and is titled Volume 3. This album debuted at number 15 on Billboard’s top 200 list. It is best known for the songs "Never Wanted Your Love" and "I Could've Been Your Girl". With this album Zooey keeps her 1960’s style intact and continues to warm the hearts of her fans.
Even though many people are unaware of the existence of Zooey’s multi-range voice and sweet lyrics I hope she will continue to delight us with her sounds.
