Looking for a Date? There’s an App for That

Finding Love/Lust in The Age of Technology

By Yvonne Stegall

There are literally dozens of dating apps of all kinds available for Android phones and iPhones. Some are very popular, like Tinder, and there are probably many you’ve never even heard of, unless you spend a lot of time in the app store searching dating apps. If that’s the case, you may be a little to desperate yet to find the right person. If not, read on.

Some well-known dating websites have apps as well, but you’ll learn about that next week when you learn more about finding love online. There are apps that will help you find a one-night “date” and apps that can help you find your perfect match. There is even an app for men seeking men. Most general dating apps and websites don’t cater to same sex matches, so it is important to find a specific app for your preferred mate.

Whatever you are looking for, here are ten of the best, or at least most interesting dating apps. If none of them seems to work for what you are looking for you can simply sign into the app store for your particular operating platform and find something that does cater to your type of romantic interest.

Tinder

Tinder is available for both iOS and Android, and is one of the most well-known dating apps out there.  The purpose of the app is to scroll through potential partners and swipe right if you like them. They show you people in your own area, and you just swipe left if you aren’t interested. If they swipe right as well, you get a chance to message each other and set up a date.

Bumble

Bumble is basically exactly the same as Tinder, except for one thing. If two people both swipe right, it is the woman that gets to initiate the conversation. The app gives the ladies 24 hours to reach out to the guy that also found them interesting or they lose the connection all together. It is currently not available for Android.

PlentyOfFish

PlentyOfFish is a free dating app for both platforms, and it’s one of the most popular. That makes it a good place to look for a date, or a relationship. Even for people that live in smaller towns. With a simple profile you can start looking for matches to message.

HowAboutWe

This app has a pretty cool name, and is available on both platforms. It’s literally a date finding site, and bases matches on their ideal date ideas. Instead of getting matched with Tom or Megan because they like horses and romance movies, you’ll get matched because you both want to have coffee tomorrow morning.

Align

If you want to be matched by a little more than just where you want to go on a date, you can try Align if you are on an iPhone. This app matches you by not just your romantic compatibility, but also by your zodiac sign.

Tastebuds

If you are a big fan of music, you may want to try Tastebuds, which makes your potential mate matches by the music you are both interested in. You can scan the music right off your iPhone into the app.  Great app for making friends to enjoy concerts with, or to find a date.

Hitch

If you don’t trust your musical taste, or the matching done by a tech device for that matter, you can always try Hitch, which lets your friends match you with partners they think are perfect for you.  This app is available for iOS and Android. You sign in through Facebook, and when you friends match you all you will see is the age and gender of your match, and a short message, including who matched you.

Score

If you want someone that is emotionally right for you, Score may be able to help. After you answer a series of interesting questions they’ll match you up with similar people. It has been described as a quirky site, so if quirky isn’t your thing you may want to check something else out.

Happn

Happn magically shares the profiles of the people you cross paths with to your profile and allows you a way to reconnect with people you meet. It’s an easy way to find them again, just in case you liked them on the first meeting but didn’t get a chance to say anything to them.

Grindr

Gay men often find it difficult to find other gay men, so Grindr gave them a safe place to look for both gay and bisexual men to get together for dates or chance meeting. Grindr is free, but also offers Grindr Xtra, which is a paid subscription and gives you add free enjoyment.

Next week you will learn about using the internet when it comes to looking for the right one, or at least someone for right now. Then, the following week, we’ll take a look at finding a date the old fashioned way, or offline anyway.
